- To: info-hams@ucsd.edu
-
- I have a PK232 using Packratt software. I can not find a default where I can
- have "break-in" in the CW mode. No trouble with it in terminal mode, but using
- the software doesn't seem to allow one to use a break-in method. I have to
- type the characters then hit either space or return to set it to send the CW.
-
- Any help would be greatly appreciated.

-
- jeff, you need to stay up to date. after march of this year, the FCC would
- only accept the new form 610s. i had to destroy the old forms after the
- exams we had in February so they wouldn't get mixed in with the new forms.
-
- if you send in a renewal with an old form, you get the application back in
- about 2 months with a new application form attached that you fill out and send
- in again and wait another 2 months.
-
- the 610 you should be using should have section 1 at the top of the page, with
- a big area for the check off of what the application is for, section 2 with
- the VE signature blocks are at the bottom and section 3 for the medical waiver
- is on the back. no "checkerboard" area with boxes to record credits and dates
- issued and all that.
-
- you can flush the rest (unless you have a museum or some other collection of
- old government forms).

- Since these batteries are usually sealed and since it is usually a problem
- with one or two cells and since hitting em with a current is usually needed
- it is going to be tough. I would say that you could try returning it. It
- should not harm the battery to leave it on the trickle charger forever. I
- say you had a bad battery. Otherewise I think you are stuck buying a new
- battery. Buy from others than the manufacturer though, it is much cheaper
- and just as good a battery if not better. Look through QST etc for ads.

- Subject: Postage rates for QSL cards
- To: info-hams@ucsd.edu
-
- The European Commission has instituted a directive some time ago to
- harmonize the charges levied for mailing purposes within Europe.
-
- For a standard letter (20g), Europe is treated as part of the letter's
- originating country. Thus the cost of mailing a letter, via airmail, from
- Brussels to say, Paris, is the same as from Brussels to Antwerp, another
- Belgian city.
-
- The cost is harmonized throughout the Union. It is currently about 50 cents
- per letter (about ECU .44) via airmail. The cost remaines the same for other
- European countries (non-EU members) but it is no longer airmail.
-
- For areas outside Europe, the letter cost is doubled onto which you add
- airmail charges and then, individual countries charge whatever they want.
- Currently from Belgium, a letter to the US costs BF 38, which is $1.20.
-
- There is no distinction between postacards and letters, thus a QSL card, is
- a letter so put it in an envelope.

- To: info-hams@ucsd.edu
-
- I read with interest the article in Sep QST on cars and radios. I am not
- very happy about the fact that Land Rovers and Range Rovers arent included.
- For those of us who have such cars, that is 4 wheel vehicles such as Jeep
- Cherokee etc, I would like to add the following information.
- - I have receivcd informatin, that there is no problem in installing radio
- transmitters in Land Rovers. Wherever Land Rovers are used in a military
- setting, they often have radios in them.
- - Whenever my Range Rover starts, all battery circuits turn off, therefore,
- turning off any radios.
- - Due to the height, I have installed a Hustler 20 meter antenna (with the
- short MO-4 mount) on the front of the car, on a spring loaded mount on the
- bull-bar. It is a couple of feet away from ignition and I have no problems
- with the electronic systems.
- - If a car antenna has two much SWR, latches turn off and all sort of things
- happen, common to other cars as well.
- - Because the antenna is on the fron (right side), it is directional in
- nature (similar to a two element beam). This would happen to other drivers
- who use the car body as a reflector.
- - After several experimements, it has turned out that the best place to
- install HF antennas is in the front of a car (the right side of the front
- bumper is the best) and not in the back, especially with hatchbacks.
-
- I hope this info is useful to others.

- Mike,
- Perhaps they were aware that you are prone to swearing on the bandwidth
- given to you and decided not to issue you a license. Lighten up, you get
- what you pay for. If you wanted it sooner, you should have taken the
- test earlier. I'm just happy that they lightened up the requirements
- from what they were ten years ago. We have a pretty decent hobby/adventure
- ahead of us, let's not mess it up.

-
- We had an initiation at our radio club many years ago during a state
